Vanilla iced coffee is the best, no matter how you serve it! We’ve already explored the vanilla ice cream version and the plant-based twist with homemade almond vanilla milk.
Today, I’m taking it up a notch and showing you how to make iced vanilla coffee with a French press and ground vanilla.
The French press method is fantastic because it really brings out the vanilla flavor during brewing. This has quickly become one of my favorite ways to enjoy vanilla coffee.
Ingredients you need
- Ground Vanilla: Adds a rich and aromatic vanilla flavor that elevates your coffee experience.
- Coffee Beans: Choose high-quality beans for a robust and flavorful base.
- Filtered Water: Ensures a clean and pure taste, free from impurities that can alter the coffee’s flavor.
- Cubed Ice: Cools the coffee quickly and maintains its refreshing quality without diluting the flavor too much.
- Milk (plant-based or whole milk): Provides a creamy texture and enhances the coffee’s overall richness; select based on dietary preference for the best experience.
How To Make French Press Vanilla Iced Coffee From Scratch
We’re brewing a classic French press coffee with a delightful twist: adding ground vanilla to the coffee grounds. You can add the ground vanilla at the start, before pouring in the water, or after four minutes of steeping.
The longer the vanilla steeps, the more intense its flavor. I’ve experimented with both methods and prefer adding the ground vanilla after four minutes of steeping for a balanced taste. However, feel free to adjust based on your personal preference!
Step 1: Filter your water and heat it to 195°F to 205°F (90°C to 96°C).
Step 2: Meanwhile, weigh out 15 g of coffee and grind it coarsely.
Step 3: Rinse your French press with hot water to prepare it.
Step 4: Place the French press on your scale, tare it, and add the ground coffee.
Step 5: Start the timer and pour in the hot water with a lot of turbulence until it reaches 220 g.
Step 6: Leave the coffee to infuse and add the ground vanilla after 4 minutes. Stir briefly and leave to infuse for an additional 4 minutes.
Step 7: Put on the plunger.
Step 8: Fill your serving glass with ice cubes and pour in the delicious vanilla coffee.
Step 9: Add the cold milk.
Step 10: Froth up some of the cold milk with a hand frother or another French press, top your coffee with it, and enjoy.

Barista Tips
- Great coffee starts with great equipment. That does not mean you need expensive things to make good coffee, but with proper maintenance, everyone’s homebrew can taste barista-made! That principle extends to the water, too! Using filtered water protects your equipment from build-up and produces a better coffee flavor!
- French press coffee is an experience, and it’s all about slowing down! Do not drink the coffee right away; allow the coffee to cool a moment after pouring it. This helps you avoid painful burns and taste your cup’s true flavor!
- If you don’t have an electric gooseneck kettle, try this easy trick: bring the water to a boil and pour it into another pot or kettle. Transferring the water will cool it down quickly.
