Brewing coffee with the V60 takes me back to when my passion for coffee first started percolating. It was my gateway into the world of specialty coffee, during a hobby course that quickly turned into a lifelong love affair with every cup I create.

While I’ve since explored countless brewing techniques and experimented with all kinds of gear, there’s something wonderfully grounding about returning to the basics.

This pour-over coffee recipe keeps it simple—just the essentials. We’re using a 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio, with a brew time of 2.5 to 3.5 minutes, for a cup that celebrates the art of balance. The process begins with blooming the grounds, then gradually pouring through the rest of the water, allowing the flavors to unfold in their own time.

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a coffee enthusiast just dipping your toes into pour-over, this recipe offers a taste of the simplicity and precision that make specialty coffee so captivating.

Ingredients you need

  • Coffee beans – Arabica, medium to light roast
  • Filtered water

How To Make a V60 Filter Coffee

Step 1: Heat the water to 93-96°C (200-205°F).

Step 2: Weigh out 15 grams of coffee beans and grind them to a medium consistency.

Step 3: Rinse the filter with hot water to preheat the Hario V60 Coffee Dripper and wash away any papery taste. Then, discard the rinse water.

Step 4: Set the Hario V60 Coffee Dripper on the scale, add the ground coffee, and level the bed.

Step 5: Tare the scale and start the timer. Pour 40 grams of water in a spiral or zigzag pattern, making sure all the grounds are saturated. Allow the coffee to bloom for 45 seconds.

Blooming phase
Pour in the hot water until you reach 225 g on your coffee scale.

Step 6: Continue pouring in a steady spiral motion, working from the center outward and then back in, until you’ve added a total of 225 grams of water.

Step 7: Give the dripper a gentle swirl and let the coffee finish dripping through. The process should take between 2.5 and 3.5 minutes.

Step 8: Pour your freshly brewed coffee into a cup and savor the moment.

Barista Tips

Why Swirl at the End?

Swirling the coffee dripper after pouring helps to achieve a better extraction by evenly distributing the grounds and ensuring that all the coffee is fully immersed in the water. This motion promotes a more consistent flow through the coffee bed, allowing the flavors to develop evenly for a well-balanced cup.

What is the Blooming Phase?

The blooming phase is the first stage of coffee extraction, where the freshly ground coffee releases trapped gases—primarily carbon dioxide—when it comes into contact with hot water. Wetting the coffee bed uniformly during this phase is crucial for an even extraction throughout the brewing process, as it allows the water to penetrate all the grounds effectively, setting the stage for a flavorful brew.
