Creamy Hot Protein Coffee (No Blender Needed!)

When the weather turns crisp and you’re craving something warm, cozy, and nourishing, this hot protein coffee is the perfect cup to start your day. It’s creamy, chocolatey, and comforting, with a solid boost of protein and a gentle jolt of espresso to help you ease into the morning. No extra sweeteners, no blender. Just steamed milk, espresso, and chocolate whey protein stirred to frothy perfection.

Need a cozy drink that actually fuels you through the day? ☕🍂

I started making this warm version once it got too chilly for iced drinks, and let me tell you, I’m obsessed. The combo of steamed milk and chocolate protein is already a dream, but that shot of espresso turns it into a full-on comfort drink with purpose. It’s perfect for slower mornings, afternoon slumps, or even as a light breakfast replacement on gym days.

For those who still enjoy an iced drink year-round, don’t miss my Iced Protein Coffee—a chill version of this recipe that’s just as easy to shake and sip.

This one, though? It’s all about slowing down. Grab your favorite mug, steam some milk, and let’s make something warm and wonderful.

Ingredients you need

  • Espresso or coffee: I usually pull a single espresso shot, but any strong brewed coffee will do. Just keep it around ¼ cup so the drink stays creamy and balanced.
  • Chocolate whey protein: I use the same chocolate whey powder from my post-workout shakes—it blends beautifully with hot milk and espresso.
  • Milk: I love using full-fat dairy milk for a creamy texture, but almond milk or oat milk works great too. Just make sure it steams well! Check my dedicated post about “which milk is best for frothing” for more details.
  • Optional add-ins: A tiny splash of vanilla extract or a sprinkle of cinnamon gives this cozy cup a hint of extra warmth and flavor.

How To Make Protein Coffee

Step 1
Steam the milk using your espresso machine or stovetop until warm and frothy (about ¾ cup). Pour into your favorite mug.

Pouring frothed milk into the glass jar.

Step 2
Add one shot of espresso (or ¼ cup strong brewed coffee) to the steamed milk.

Step 3
Add one scoop of chocolate whey protein directly into the mug. Stir it in with a long-handled spoon to start blending.

Step 4
Use a hand frother to fully combine the drink—this helps the protein dissolve smoothly and creates a creamy, foamy texture.

Step 5
Sip and enjoy while it’s still warm and frothy! 🍫☕✨

Top Tips

Always add the protein powder last and mix gently with a spoon first. Then go in with a hand frother to make it creamy and smooth—no clumps, just cozy deliciousness.

Products

  • Espresso machine or coffee maker
  • Steam wand or milk frother (to steam milk)
  • Long-handled spoon

  • Favorite mug (the bigger the better!)

Storage

This one’s best enjoyed fresh and hot. Protein powders don’t always hold up well when reheated. But you can pre-brew your espresso or coffee and store it in the fridge to save time!
