Sparkling Coffee Soda (A Fun Twist on the Iced Americano)
You know that moment when someone asks you a question that flips a switch in your brain? That happened to me not long ago while taste-testing my homemade coffee syrup. I was handing out samples like candy, and my favorite physical therapist at work was the one who asked right away, “Did you try mixing it with water?”
Boom. Lightbulb moment.
That simple question sparked a new obsession: coffee soda. It’s bright, bold, bubbly—and honestly? Kind of addictive. Imagine your favorite iced Americano, but with extra personality. The deep richness of the fantastic coffee syrup, sweetened just enough thanks to the syrup we lovingly reduced on the stovetop, finished off with an effervescent splash of sparkling water. It’s refreshing, caffeinated, and ridiculously easy to make.
If you’ve got homemade coffee syrup in the fridge and a craving for something fizzy, you’re going to love this one.
Ingredients you need
- Sparkling Water
I love using fizzy water straight from a bottle—but if you have a soda syphon or sparkling water maker at home, go for it! The bubbles are key here! - Coffee Syrup
Use that rich, homemade coffee syrup you lovingly brewed (or are about to!). Start with a little and adjust to taste—this syrup packs a lot of flavor, and even a spoonful adds a significant amount of personality. - Cubed Ice
Step-by-step
How To Make Coffee Soda
Step 1: Fill your glass
Grab a tall glass (I used a highball) and add plenty of cubed ice!
Step 2: Add the fizz
Pour in cold sparkling water until the glass is nearly full. You can use bottled fizzy water, a soda siphon, or a SodaStream.
Step 3: Stir in the coffee syrup
Add a spoonful or two of your homemade coffee syrup. Start small and stir, then taste and adjust as needed. It’s all about finding your perfect balance.
Step 4: Serve and sip
Pop in a reusable straw and enjoy right away! The color is gorgeous—slightly golden and totally tempting—and the flavor? Light, refreshing, and surprisingly addictive. Perfect for those no-fuss coffee cravings!
Serving Tips
- Adjust the Sweetness to Taste
- Start with a small amount of coffee syrup and add more if you prefer a sweeter taste.
- Use Cold, Fresh Bubbles
- The colder the sparkling water, the better the fizz!
- Serve Immediately
- Fancy It Up (Optional but Fun!)
- Add a slice of lemon, a sprig of mint, or even a dash of orange bitters if you fancy.
Why I Call It Coffee Soda
Sure, you could call this an iced Americano remix—but to me, this drink deserves its own name. Coffee soda just fits. It’s bubbly, bold, and feels like such a treat, even though it’s incredibly easy to make.
Unlike an Americano, there’s no espresso involved here. Instead, we’re letting that beautiful homemade coffee syrup do all the flavor work, stirred right into fizzy water over ice. The result? A drink that tastes like coffee, sparkles like soda, and refreshes like nothing else.
Products
- Serving Glass
- I used a highball glass for this recipe—it gives the drink room to sparkle and really shows off that gorgeous golden color.
- Measuring Tools or Jigger
- Reusable Straw
- Optional: Soda Stream or Soda Syphon
- If you love your bubbles fresh and strong, a soda maker is a significant upgrade. Totally optional, but very fun if you’re into sparkling everything like I am.
